I am currently Professor and Director of the Geography Program in the Department of Political Science & Geography.  I came to Old Dominion in 2008, after teaching for thirteen years at Florida State University.  I received my Ph.D. in 1992 from Syracuse University.

My research and publications have focused in the areas of political geography, cultural geography, ‘race’ and ethnicity, and identity and public memory, with a regional focus on the American South.  Overall, much of my academic research has focused on political and cultural change in the American South, with an emphasis on the areas of: 1) the politics of memory and representation on the Southern landscape involving Confederate and Civil Rights iconography, and 2) ‘race’, elections and voting rights in the American South.  In addition, I also conduct research in the areas of sports and geography, and geography education.
