Hello, I’m Ambrosio Valencia-Romero, an assistant professor at Old Dominion University’s Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering.
My primary expertise lies in engineering systems design, systems theory, and computational modeling and simulation. I aim to apply these skills to advance strategic and mission engineering, digital engineering of large-scale systems-of-systems, and designing incentive mechanisms for collaborative product and systems development.
Before joining Old Dominion University, I earned my Ph.D. in systems engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in 2021. I also hold bachelor’s and M.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Universidad del Atlántico in Colombia and the Universidad de Puerto Rico Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez. My industry experience includes working in the naval technology sector and the mining and construction equipment industries, providing me with practical insights that complement my academic background.
Throughout my academic career, I have had the opportunity to contribute to diverse research efforts. Some of these endeavors include researching the challenges and opportunities for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics in aligning early-stage planning and execution of large-scale capital projects — as a postdoc at Carnegie Mellon University — and leveraging network science and visual analytics for a meaningful digital transformation of regions with a critical need to level up their infrastructure and increase their productivity — as a postdoc at the Roux Institute. I have also served on academic integrity committees, as a peer mentor, and as chair of academic symposia.
