I am a Professor and Eminent Scholar in the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences, where he has been a faculty member since 1985. I also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. \u00a0I received a B.A. (with Honors) in chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1978, and a Ph.D. in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego in 1983. \u00a0I am an internationally-known expert in marine geochemistry, and have spent much of his career studying biogeochemical processes in marine and estuarine sediments and their resulting effects on the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and trace metals such as iron, manganese and copper. \u00a0I have also been involved in related studies of carbon cycling in high latitude (boreal) peatlands. \u00a0I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, and in 2006 authored the book Geochemistry of Marine Sediments<\/em>, published by Princeton Univ. Press. \u00a0I am a past co-Editor in Chief of the journal\u00a0Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science<\/em> (2015-2014) and\u00a0an associate editor for the journal\u00a0Aquatic Geochemistry. \u00a0<\/em>I am currently an Associate Editor of the 4th edition of the Encyclopedia of Ocean Sciences <\/em>(Elsevier). In 2016 I was awarded the Antarctic Service Medal of the United States of America \u201cin recognition of valuable contributions to exploration and scientific achievement under the US Antarctic Program.\u201d \u00a0In 2017 I was elected a Fellow of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) in recognition of his contributions in the field of oceanography and service to the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to my research efforts, I teach classes in chemical oceanography, environmental geochemistry, marine sediment geochemistry, and global environmental change. I was very proud to see he chose my book, and was equally proud to be included here with the book “A Confederacy of Dunces” (which is one of my all-time favorite novels).
