I also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. I received a B.A. (with Honors) in chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1978, and a Ph.D. in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego in 1983. I am an internationally-known expert in marine geochemistry, and have spent much of his career studying biogeochemical processes in marine and estuarine sediments and their resulting effects on the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and trace metals such as iron, manganese and copper. I have also been involved in related studies of carbon cycling in high latitude (boreal) peatlands. I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, and in 2006 authored the book Geochemistry of Marine Sediments, published by Princeton Univ. Press. I am a past co-Editor in Chief of the journal Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science (2015-2014) and an associate editor for the journal Aquatic Geochemistry. I am currently an Associate Editor of the 4th edition of the Encyclopedia of Ocean Sciences (Elsevier). In 2016 I was awarded the Antarctic Service Medal of the United States of America “in recognition of valuable contributions to exploration and scientific achievement under the US Antarctic Program.” In 2017 I was elected a Fellow of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) in recognition of his contributions in the field of oceanography and service to the society.

In addition to my research efforts, I teach classes in chemical oceanography, environmental geochemistry, marine sediment geochemistry, and global environmental change. This includes a course for non-science majors more specifically focused on global climate change, which can be used by undergraduates at ODU to satisfy the natural science general education requirement.

For a copy of my complete CV click on the link in the menu in the upper left

To see my Google Scholar page click here and to see my “unofficial” biography click here.

When my friend and colleague Dr. Hussain Abdulla was promoted to full professor at Texas A&M Corpus Christi his library asked the newly minted professors what books had most inspired their work.
