IOC 1990

Departed: Cape Town , South Africa
Date: 13 March 1990
Arrived: Funcha, Madeira, Portugal
Date: 15 April 1990
The IOC 1990 was the first of two cruises conducted that measured more than eighteen trace metals in both deep and surface waters in the Atlantic Ocean. This first baseline survey cruise showed how atmospheric deposition greatly affects the biogeochemical cycling of several trace metals (e.g., Al, Fe, Hg, Sb), and that physical forcing (deep water circulation, upwelling) strongly influences the concentrations and distributions of trace metals. The 1990 baseline cruise was the first to measure levels of silver in the South Atlantic
