A nice discussion of the current situation concerning the Trump Administration and my non-citizen voting study in the Virginian Pilot this morning.<\/p>\n

“If Jesse Richman could get one message to President Donald Trump, it would probably be this:<\/em><\/p>\n

Stop misquoting our research.<\/em><\/p>\n

Richman, an associate professor at Old Dominion University, found his work tangled up in Trump\u2019s latest effort to support his unsubstantiated claim that millions of illegal ballots were cast in November \u2013 the reason Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million.<\/em><\/p>\n

Trump announced Wednesday that he\u2019s ordering a \u201cmajor investigation\u201d into voter fraud \u2013 a claim he first made on the campaign trail, then repeated this week at a meeting with Republican leaders.<\/em><\/div>\n

Richman heard his research \u2013 or some twist on it \u2013 being cited by White House press secretary Sean Spicer as he defended Trump\u2019s \u201clong-standing belief\u201d to a room full of reporters Tuesday:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think there have been studies; there was one that came out of Pew in 2008 that showed 14 percent of people who have voted were not citizens.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Spicer got it all wrong, according to Richman.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, he\u2019s confusing our study with another study,\u201d Richman said, \u201cand then he\u2019s flipping ours around and exaggerating the most extreme estimates from it.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n
