Robert Stiffler Professor of Botany.\u00a0 I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and attended the College of William and Mary for B.S. and M.A. degrees before heading to Ohio for a PhD from The Ohio State University and then on to the University of South Dakota for a postdoctoral appointment.\u00a0 My research interests span plant systematics, evolution, and biogeography, and I focus research on native orchids. I also serve as Curator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/oduherbarium\/\">ODU Herbarium<\/a>, Faculty Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odu.edu\/sci\/research\/orchid-conservatory\">Kaplan Orchid Conservatory,<\/a> and Director of Science at <a href=\"https:\/\/norfolkbotanicalgarden.org\/\">Norfolk Botanical Garden<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mart\u00edn Batalla, PhD Candidate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fs.wp.odu.edu\/lewallac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4169\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220512_170324_920-011.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-227\" src=\"http:\/\/fs.wp.odu.edu\/lewallac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4169\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220512_170324_920-011-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo of Martin\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fs.wp.odu.edu\/lewallac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4169\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220512_170324_920-011-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/fs.wp.odu.edu\/lewallac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4169\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220512_170324_920-011-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/fs.wp.odu.edu\/lewallac\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4169\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220512_170324_920-011.jpeg 506w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a>Mart\u00edn is working with <em>Nototriche <\/em>(Malvaceae), a genus of more than 100 species distributed along the Andes in South America. He is especially interested in producing a phylogeny of the genus, along with studying the distribution patterns of polyploids, which are prevalent in this group. Having been born and raised in Argentina, he is excited to work in this region of the world along with the people in it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meghan Britton, PhD Student<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meghan joined the lab after several years as a middle school science teacher. This research aims to better understand the role of hybridization in a changing climate.
