Up until then I hadn&#8217;t really had much experience discussing sensitive topics. I learned that you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable to talk about important issues. That being said, I did not choose to use something like critical discourse analysis, the study of language related to the imbalance of power structures, for my own research. The work I did in this course I was able to continue in a later course and present on at the International Pragmatics Conference in 2017. We recorded everyday conversations and transcribed them using DuBois et. al. This was a big help when I did the final project as the Santa Barbara corpus is also transcribed using these conventions.
