First Trip to Baku — Day Six
I have way too many photos now for FB, so will dole them out or make an album or maybe just throw them all out at one time. 🙂
What an amazing week…very productive, very informative and a wonderful experience with an absolutely dedicated, loyal and great group of administrators and staff at ADA University!
Now about food…Presentation is always interesting and artistic. We had a great dinner last at Mira Valla, a traditional Russian restaurant that is also in the US, but my friends say this one is much better than the one in DC. Lunch today at a small restaurant with the Registrar and Vice Rector for Student Affairs. This restaurant was far less elegant than the one last night, but I had my first traditional AZ bread, tandyr. It was warm and crusty, sort of a low-rise bread baked in a tandyr oven…delicious! Many chicken dishes come with something baked inside — today it was mushrooms.
Tonight, the senior vice rector took Kate, Rovshana and me to the Old City to a wonderful restaurant, The Sultan Inn, where the food was great and the view spectacular.
The Maiden Tower in the photo behind me comes with a many stories about the origin of its name, but it was built in the 12th century and the Caspian Sea used to come to the foot of the tower. The sea receded and now is probably half a mile away.
Most of the photos are of food…I’m supposed to be getting the names, but it won’t matter by the time I do! It was all good 🙂. Dinners are relaxed and slow and full of shared food. Most is served family style and service has been amazing. One photo includes the waiter from last night. He was delightful. Many people speak at least some English and I have discovered that the wait staff and the person ordering the food seem to develop quite a relationship while discussing the order!
I also discovered the police drive BMW’s…who would have guessed!
Photos from yesterday and today!
