Projects

The geographic perspective provides insights in the world. Maps are more than location, I am involved in projects to support the use of maps as learning tools for K-12 geographic education. Everything is geographic!
For basic tenets guide the work:

  • Maps are more than location.
  • Inquiry unlocks meaning.
  • Interaction supports learning.
  • He or she who makes the map learns the most.

Teacher Workshops

Each year teacher workshops to support the integration of GIS into the20150721_095852 K-12 curriculum are offered. The workshops have been supported by grants from the ESRI ConnectED initiative and the Virginia Geographic Alliance.

Placing Primary Sources

Collaboration with the Library of Congress and the Virginia Geographic Alliance produced 11 story maps to feature key topics in American history based on primary sources from the Library of Congress. Six teacher “researchers” developed story maps featuring primary sources, guiding questions, and accompanying support materials. View the Placing Primary Sources site.

Virginia GeoInquiries

In collaboration with Esri, the Virginia Geographic Alliance was awarded a grant to develop 5 state-specific GeoInquiries. GeoInquiries™ “are short, standards-based inquiry activities for teaching map-based content. Each activity is designed using a common inquiry model and can be presented quickly from a single computer and projector or modified for students’ hands-on engagement. “
