Pro-glacial lakes

Funded by NASA (Solar System Workings Program), this project seeks to understand how groundwater seepage into lakes impacts the sedimentology and mineralogy of basaltic terrains. We are studying pro-glacial lakes (Sandvatn) in Iceland as Earth analogs for Martian research.

Our team is using radon and heat (temperature) as tracers of groundwater flow into the pro-glacial lakes. We are using water stable isotopes and a variety of other geochemical measurements to characterize river, lake and groundwater signatures (springs, shallow versus confined).
