Fall 2020 Update

Congratulations to our lab’s former Research Assistant Professor Dr. Hongmei Chen for accepting an Associate Professor position at Xiamen University in Fujian, China! We will miss her dearly and look forward to seeing her new lab grow!

Additionally, we wish to congratulate Dr. Alex Goranov on obtaining his Ph.D. this semester and accepting a postdoctoral position with Dr. Sasha Wagner at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute! Alex also was featured on ODU’s College of Sciences website. Congratulations and best of luck, Alex!

Macey Cohen finished this semester with her MS in Chemistry! Thank you for keeping the laboratory organized and organizing the move into the new chemistry building.

Last and certainly not least, we welcome our new graduate students Hannah Hamontree, Samantha Sullivan, and Louis Bondurant. They started their graduate studies in the middle of a pandemic but have shown themselves to be resilient and truly flexible with the additional health & safety regulations for teaching undergraduate labs. Here’s what Hannah had to say about her first semester as a PhD student:

“The semester flew by. I instructed general chemistry labs as a teaching assistant, took organic and geochemistry courses, and began collaborating on a research project. With Alex transitioning on to the next phase in his career as a post-grad, we were able to sneak one last pyrogenic carbon study in before the end of the semester. I’m thankful for the hands-on experience to new methods and instrumentation during the challenging COVID season. I’ll be moving on to winter break goals of reading up on instrument theory and getting the lab ready for the upcoming move!”

In early January 2021, our lab members began packing the lab for the big move into the new chemistry building, slated to be opened later this year. We are thrilled to have all of chemistry in one place!
