Discourse and Rhetoric Across Cultures

This course was an in-depth look at discourse and rhetoric across cultures. We studied and discussed some of the foundational literature of the field as well as newer research. We drew on concepts from linguistics as well as sociology to look at theoretical approaches and methods of studying language within particular cultural contexts. Some highlights of the course for me were reading Hill’s (2008) The Everyday Language of White Racism, and DeFina & Georgakopoulou’s (2012) Analyzing Narrative: Discourse and Sociolinguistic Perspectives.

I was able to delve deeper into research I’d previously worked on in Discourse Analysis, and I’ve included the poster that I presented at the 15th International Pragmatics Conference in 2017 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
