Since joining ODU in 2011, upon request, I provided various services for CEE, BCET, and ODU. In addition, I helped a number of students in their career preparations, and sponsored several international visiting professors and doctoral students. Moreover, I extensively served the profession. The ultimate goal is to excel the Environmental and Water Resources program here.
Service for CEE, BCET, and ODU
- In fall 2011, I developed an upgrading plan for the Hydraulics/Water Resources Laboratory and purchased equipment/instruments. I also recruited one doctorial and three master students.
- In 2012, I served two faculty search committees, and two TA/RA selection committees, of CEE and BCET. In addition, I was the adviser for one doctorial and four master students, and a committee member for one D.Eng and three master students. Further, I sponsored a seminar at CEE by an international researcher and participated in CEE graduate research seminars.
- In 2013, I served two CEE faculty search committees and two (CEE and BCET) TA/RA selection committees. In addition, I was the adviser for two doctorial, one D.Eng, and seven master students. Three master students graduated. Further, I was a committee member for one doctorial and nine master students.
- In 2014, I served one BCET TA/RA selection committee. In addition, I was the adviser for two doctorial, one D.Eng, and five master students. Two master students graduated and one doctorial student became a Ph.D. candidate. Further, I was a committee member for two doctorial and five master students. Moreover, I reviewed a number of applications of CEE prospective graduate students, and attended several CEE, BCET, and ODU seminars.
- In 2015, I served the BCET Honor and ODU TA/RA selection committees. In addition, I was the adviser for three doctorial, one D.Eng, and eight master students. Further, I was a committee member for three doctorial and ten master students. Moreover, I reviewed a number of applications of CEE prospective graduate students, and participated in several CEE, BCET, and ODU seminars.
- In spring and summer 2016, I served the BCET Honor and CEE Security committees. In addition, I was the adviser for three doctorial, one D.Eng, and nine master students. One more doctorial student became a Ph.D. candidate. Further, I was a committee member for three doctorial and ten master students. Moreover, I reviewed a number of applications of CEE prospective graduate students, and attended several CEE, BCET, and ODU seminars.
- Starting from 2012, on average, I advised sixteen CEE undergraduate students per semester.
Service in Students’ Preparations and Program Enrichment
Since joining ODU in 2011, I wrote recommendation letters for students to apply for more advanced study, scholarship/fellowship, and job. In addition, I mentored creative works for university-honor students, and provided technical supports and evaluations for students’ senior design projects. Further, I sponsored international visiting professors and doctorial students to create a multicultural environment.
Service for the Profession
Since joining ODU in 2011, I served the profession as an Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, Guest Editor, journal referee, proposal reviewer, conference convener, and invited speaker. The journals I served are top ones in Hydrology and Water Resources, while the conferences have a high professional reputation.
What’s next in My Service?
I will continue my services to CEE, BCET, ODU, and the profession, to excel the education at ODU.
